Selena Gomez Reveals Her Hair Care Secrets

Selena Gomez recently revealed some of her hair care secrets to Cosmo U.K., telling the magazine, "I don't wash my hair everyday, which may sound gross, but it's actually really bad for my hair." Selena went on to explain that she usually washes her hair every third of fourth day, and uses a little dry shampoo on the off days.

So is skipping a few washes going to give you hair like the Pantene spokesmodel? Unfortunately, probably not, but that doesn't mean there isn't something to be said for less frequent washes. The answer to how often to wash your hair is a very individual one. Did you know that Europeans wash their hair on average 2-3 times a week and many Americans wash twice a day?  If your scalp is oily or you tend to workout, you might need to wash your hair more frequently than someone who has dry hair or scalp or who is not as athletically active.

As for how often you should use dry shampoo between washes, this varies by individual as well, due to their sebum production, lifestyle and styling habits. In the beginning, I would advise trying the dry shampoo just once or twice between washes and be mindful of sebum, product or other buildup that could impact style or scalp health. Dry shampoo should absolutely NOT replace your regular shampoo/conditioner regimen.

Just remember, hair care is just like skin care, and should be adjusted to your specific needs.

Dry Shampoo Tips - Parentables.com

I recently gave some tips on dry shampoo to Parentables.com. For those who might be interested in using dry shampoo on their hair, here are a few of these tips:

  • If you have oily, limp or flat hair and an oily scalp that causes oil buildup between shampooing, try a dry shampoo for those in-between times
  • Usually it's the root near the scalp that affects styling and coverage - especially if you've got fine/thinning hair. Apply the dry shampoo product at the scalp, near the root.
  • Because dry shampoo is taking away the oils on your scalp, know that you risk leaving your hair dull and feeling rough - especially if you have cuticle damage from over-styling
