Zendaya's Dreadlocks Beautiful, But Risky

Zendaya, a rising star on the Disney Channel, raised eyebrows on the red carpet with her stellar look - and dreadlocked hair. It was the latter that led to some off-the-cuff jokes by E! co-host Giuliana Rancic, who was later criticized for what many perceived as the insensitive nature of the comments.

However, as beautiful as Zendaya is, her Oscar hairdo is concerning, and for one reason: traction alopecia.

Women who wear their hair in dreadlocks, tight pony tails, braids, weaves or extensions can cause long-term (and even permanent) damage to their follicles, due to the tugging/pulling or extra weight these hair styles put on the follicles. Down the road, this can lead to hairline recession and bald patches (known as "traction alopecia," or "scarring alopecia") - a good example is Naomi Campbell.

That's not to say Zendaya has anything to worry about now - after all, she's still young. But hopefully she'll avoid wearing her hair in this style, not that it isn't beautiful, but because it is risky to the underlying health of her follicles.

John Travolta's Toupee

John Travolta's appearance at Sunday night's Oscars was one of the most widely tweeted (and criticized) of all the celebrities who walked the red carpet. But aside from face grabbing and nuzzling, one thing that stood out the most was his mysteriously full hair line ...

For years, Travolta has been donning what appears to be a toupee. At 61, hair loss is no surprise, but the actor would do better by pursuing medical treatment options to fill in his bald spots with real, live, growing hair, and strengthen those areas that are actively thinning.

Is Matt Lauer's Hair Loss Recoverable?

Today's show Matt Lauer is the face millions of Americans wake up to every morning - but for years, he's allowed his hairline to recede. But is it too late to fix it?

Obviously, at this stage, it wouldn't be possible to create a youthful hairline, but with the right treatment approach, Lauer could see significant improvement in the coverage of his crown. With a combination of NeoGraft FUE and other therapies such as PRP, Formula 82M and Propecia, the 57-year old NBC anchor could achieve a fuller look with his hairline.

Lauer has often joked about his baldness over the years, and he seems quite comfortable with it. However, for those men who are concerned about losing their hair, it's important to remember that early intervention is the key to getting the best results. At the same time, however, men should never give up on their hair. Even at a more advanced stage, it is possible to achieve positive results with hair restoration.

Dr. Dre's Hair Misses a Beat

Legendary rapper, music producer and entrepreneur Dr. Dre is perhaps most famous these days for his $3 billion sale of "Beats by Dr. Dre" to Apple, which reportedly made him the first hip-hop billionaire. But Dre's hair isn't doing as well as the music icon's career.

For year's Dre's hairline has been noticeably receding, and recent photos also show deep thinning in the crown. It also appears he might be using a camouflage agent to add thickness to the frontal hairline.

At 49, there's a still a lot Dre could do to improve the quality and fullness of his hair. Formula 82M and Propecia would be a good start - he might also want to consider a limited NeoGraft FUE hair transplant and possibly some PRP treatments.

The Kingsman's Hair Problem

Colin Firth's hairline, although thinning, is in fairly good shape for a man his age. But the 52-year old British actor would do well to consider undergoing treatment with platelet-rich plasma therapy or low level laser therapy in order to revitalize his aging hairline and improve its fullness.

In spite of his dwindling locks, Firth's career remains red-hot, with a new movie out this Friday - "Kingsman: The Secret Service." Hopefully, this talented actor will take care to maintain his hair as well as he's handled his career.

Jeremy Piven is on a Roll - Thanks to His Hair

Would Jeremy Piven be the star he is today had he not (presumably) undergone hair transplant surgery at some point in the late 1990s or early 2000s?

Obviously, Mr. Piven is an incredibly talented actor - he's won three Emmy Awards, one Golden Globe and received 13 additional nominations. However, does anyone remember the young, bald Piven from The Larry Sanders Show or his small role in Heat? Piven's big break didn't come until 2004 with the HBO series Entourage, and by then he had a much fuller head of hair. It's hard to imagine Piven pulling off the uber-confident Ari Gold with the despairing hairline he had just a few years earlier.

It seems quite clear that Piven underwent hair transplantation - after all, this photo emerged in 2010, which seems to show a very noticeable lateral scar line which is typical of a particular type of outdated hair transplant surgery known as strip-harvest. This procedure has since been replaced by the scar-less, no scalpel, no stitch NeoGraft FUE.

At 49 years old, Piven's hair is looking better than ever. So is his career. He just started season three of the critically acclaimed ITV/PBS series Mr. Selfridge and he'll also be returning in his award-winning role as Ari Gold in Entourage when the film version hits theaters this summer.

The #1 Hair Loss Risk for Female Celebrities

While we usually think of hair loss as a 'man's problem,' the reality is that a majority of women tend to experience some type of thinning over the course of their lives - particularly after menopause.

However, many women experience it much earlier in life. There are a number of causes for this - early onset androgenetic alopecia, hair breakage and fallout due to harsh chemical treatments and styling, poor nutrition, medications, health complications, etc.

But among female celebrities, the cause of early hair loss is often due to one extremely bad styling decision - hair extensions.

Every year, hair extensions seem to become even more popular, which is unfortunate because they can take a heavy toll on the follicles - a fact which many women don't seem to realize. Over the years, a number of celebrities have been spotted with bald spots that likely were caused by extensions - Naomi Campbell, Serena Williams, Kim Kardashian, Fergie, Jennifer Aniston and more.

The problem with extensions is that they put excess weight on the hair, pulling the follicles. This pulling can physically damage the follicles, leading to permanent bald patches throughout the scalp in a condition known as traction alopecia or scarring alopecia. Once the follicle has been damaged in this way, it's irrecoverable. The only way to restore the lost hair is to undergo a micro-surgical hair transplant.
