Michael Lohan Gets Hair Transplant Ahead of Lindsay's Wedding

Michael Lohan recently underwent a hair transplant, no doubt to help him look his best at daughter Lindsay's upcoming wedding.

At 56, Lohan has been experiencing hair loss for years, and had deep recession in the temporal regions as well as a balding crown. For years, he had tried different methods to conceal the hair loss, including a combover style, but as the hair loss progressed, these methods simply weren't enough anymore.

Good for him for taking advantage of the advanced transplant methods available. New microsurgical no-scalpel/no-stitch harvesting techniques like NeoGraft FUE or ARTAS Robotic-Assisted Transplants allow for a minimally-invasive no-linear-scar “follicle-by-follicle” approach. This advanced process allows for diminished downtime and discomfort while avoiding the pluggy look and linear scars which traditional ‘old-style’ hair transplants left behind.

You can read more about Lohan's transplant, and see photos at The Daily Mail.

Former England Footballer David Platt Discusses Robotic Hair Transplant

The ARTAS System

Former England Football captain, David Platt, is opening up about his recent hair transplant. Platt, 49, who now does sports commentary, wanted to improve his severely receded hairline, and decided to take advantage of the latest transplant technology - robotic hair transplants.

Platt underwent his hair transplant 18 months ago, and is now sharing his results. The transplant was performed with the ARTAS System, an image-guided robot that can harvest up to 1,000 hair grafts in a single hour - which makes hair transplant surgery faster and safer. The combination of artistry and technology afforded by ARTAS means patients are getting the ‘best of both worlds,’ and the end result is hairlines that look incredibly natural and not transplanted.

I'm happy to hear that Platt is pleased with his results, and that he is sharing his story with his fans. Hopefully this helps encourage more men unhappy with their own hair loss to take advantage of this cutting-edge technology.

You can read more about Platt's surgery, and see before-and-after photos, here.

Transplant Watch: Gordon Ramsey

As I discussed last week, the Internet is buzzing about whether or not celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey underwent a second hair transplant recently.

Recent photos seemed to suggest he had, and more evidence to support the transplant theory can be seen in new photos showing a completely shaved undercut. While many are calling his new look bizarre, that kind of shave definitely gives good access to the donor area.

The speculation with no doubt continue for Ramsey, and I hope he considers speaking up about his transplant. Hair transplants are not the taboo topic they once were, and he would hardly be the first celebrity to publicly discuss his experience.

Jermaine Jackson's Bizarre Hair Paint

Jermaine Jackson's recent spot on Celebrity Wife Swap has left many people wondering what exactly is going on with his hairline. Jackson, 59, appears to be using some bizarre type of hair paint/camouflage to disguise his disappearing hairline. It isn't uncommon for a man of his age to be struggling with hair loss issues, in fact, 60 percent of men in their 60s have some degree of hair loss, but there are certainly better ways to address the issue.

The look is no doubt unnatural, and unnecessary, considering the technology available to restore your hairline - specifically today's hair transplants.

NeoGraft FUE, or the "cadillac of transplants," is a machine that allows doctors to perform a hair transplant surgery with remarkable precision and without scalpel or stitches. Thanks to this advanced technology, today's hair transplants are often completely undetectable to the naked eye.

NBA Hair Awards - GQ.com

Who has the best hair in the NBA? Who has the worst? Do ponytails belong on the court? To find out, check out GQ.com's NBA Hair Awards, see the slideshow here

I write a lot about celebrities, but a growing number of high profile athletes are taking advantage of the new technologies available to treat hair loss. In the past few years, Broncos' wide receiver Wes Welker, LeBron James, and Tom Brady have all reportedly undergone hair transplants to help restore their hairlines. English footballer Wayne Rooney even documented his transplant experience for the media and his fans.

No doubt these athletes are drawn to new transplant techniques that require little downtime and discreet healing. The FDA-approved NeoGraft FUE device is used to extract individual hair follicles from the donor area at the back of the patient's scalp which are then implanted into the bald areas of the scalp. This method replaces the prior technique of cutting a large strip from the back of the patient's scalp and eliminates the use of sutures or staples. FUE procedures leave no linear scar and patients can return to moderate athletic activity in just days instead of weeks making it perfect for athletes.

Joey Fatone Undergoes Hair Transplant

Former N'Sync star Joey Fatone is opening up about his recent struggle with premature hair loss, and his decision to undergo a hair transplant.

Fatone, 36, was reported saying the surgery itself was a little "intimidating," but he was just happy he had options to treat his hair loss. In fact, he is so happy with his decision that he has agreed to become the new poster child for Bosley clinic.

It's unclear why Fatone would have opted for this older linear hair transplant method - when a more advanced procedure known as NeoGraft FUE (no scalpel/no stitch) is now widely available and doesn't leave a linear scar, since the follicular units are harvested individually. UK footballer Wayne Rooney made his FUE-style hair transplant famous by tweeting out his post-op pictures. Today, a growing number of celebrities are embracing the new technology available to discreetly treat their hair loss.

Good for him for taking advantage of today's treatment options and speaking up and informing the public on the positive impact his procedure has had on his confidence. Celebrity endorsements are becoming an important tool in breaking the stigma associated with hair loss.

Broncos' Wes Welker Discusses Hair Transplant

Denver Broncos' wide receiver Wes Welker is proud of his new head of hair - and he wants to tell you about it! The athlete has given a number of media interviews lately to discuss his recent hair transplant procedure and how happy he is with the results.

Welker joins athletes like Wayne Rooney who have decided to publicly address their decision to undergo a hair transplant, he was quoted in a recent interview saying, “It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. If you want to have hair, have hair. I don’t like to sit there and say ‘What are you talking about? I never got my hair done. People can notice it without wondering.”
Welker's transplant procedure was performed last year, and from the before-and-after photos, you can see how successful the procedure was.
His openness to discuss his own procedure has prompted some reporters from asking him about the rumored transplant undergone by his former teammate Tom Brady - Welker politely declined to comment. To read more about how Tom Brady could have had a "secret" hair transplant, click here

Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean's Hair Transplant

Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean, who some may recall was often seen wearing a fedora to cover up his balding hair, can now hit the stage this summer sans fedora, thanks to his recent hair transplant.

The 35-year-old Backstreet Boys singer recently revealed on Instagram that he underwent a hair transplant and proudly showed off before and after pictures, saying, "he couldn't be happier."

McLean, who appears to have undergone a traditional strip harvest transplant, is hardly the first celebrity to take action against hair loss, more celebrities are investing in hair restoration than ever before. New technology, like FUE, are selling points for many stars looking to enhance their looks discreetly. FUE eliminates the need for doctors to remove a large strip of skin from the back of the scalp—a procedure known as a linear or strip-harvest—and therefore leaves no linear scar.

McLean's transplant looks good and he should feel comfortable hanging up the fedora!

Dr. B's Tip - 3 Hair Transplant Mistakes to Watch Out For

USA Today released a special report today about surgical mistakes, which made me think of my own field of hair restoration surgery. I’m a strong advocate for hair transplantion in men and women who need a higher level of restoration than what can be achieved through FDA approved medications and low level laser therapy. But patients need to be careful - remember, this is a real surgery and it can have consequences if not performed correctly by a qualified surgeon.

Here are the top three mistakes to watch out for:

  1. Unqualified Doctor - The most important thing of all is to make sure your doctor is a board-certified hair restoration surgeon by the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS). You can look up ABHRS diplomates here. But there are other signs to look for too: is he or she ‘recommended’ by the American Hair Loss Association? is she an active member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery? how many hair transplants has he performed? will he show you the before-and-after photos of his patients?
  2. Outdated Surgical Techniques - Every hair transplant patient today should be receiving a NeoGraft follicular-unit extraction - period. The NeoGraft FUE offers the best results: it’s the most minimally invasive transplant, doesn’t require a scalpel or stitches, doesn’t leave a linear scar and allows for 100% natural-looking results. It also has a faster recovery time and a lower risk of post-op complications, infections, etc. A lot of doctors still rely on the old-school strip-harvest hair transplant, which takes a large donor strip from the back of your scalp. This procedure is outdated and should not be used. Make sure your doctor is offering a NeoGraft FUE.
  3. Bad Follicle Handling and Placement - How the harvested follicles (grafts) are handled by the surgical team and how they are artistically placed into the scalp by the surgeon still determines the naturalness, density and results from the procedure. If the follicles are ‘mishandled’ by an inexperienced team of technicians or without appropriate magnification and instrumentation, graft survival may be impacted - thereby squandering precious donor hair follicles. Also, if the surgeon does not have an aesthetic sense and understand the subtle nuances of hairline design, the naturalness of the results can ultimately suffer. In the worst cases, these unnatural hairlines may require repair.

A few years ago, I created a hair transplant patient checklist that still works great today. Check it out here.

Celebrity Hair Transplant Poll

According to a recent U.K. poll, England football star Wayne Rooney tops the list of best celebrity hair transplants, the Daily Mail reports. Coming in at a close second was actor James Nesbitt

Participants were also asked to name five celebrities who would most benefit from a hair transplant – and unsurprisingly, Prince William took top honors. The prince's hair woes have often garnered attention from the media and the public. Actor Jude Law came in second on the list as another celebrity who would benefit from a little "follicle intervention."

Mickey Rourke's Vanishing Hairline

New photos of actor Mickey Rourke have some asking, "What happened to his hair?!" The photos show the 59-year old star with over-processed, spiked blonde hair and a vanishing hairline. If you look back at older photos of Rourke, you'll see some early signs of temporal recession, but it appears now it is time for medical intervention if he wants to restore his hairline and save the hair that he has left! In my opinion, it is time to follow in the footsteps of a growing number of stars and get a hair transplant!

Today, hair transplantation is growing in popularity and can often be done undetectably. NeoGraft FUE has made the transplantation process easier than ever and a viable option for both men and women. New technology and non-invasive procedures like NeoGraft are selling points for many celebrities looking to enhance their looks discreetly.

Is Mitt Romney's Hair Fake?

At 64, Mitt Romney continues to keep his remarkably full hairline. As most people know, the hair loss risk increases with age, but, specifically, at his age, Romney is defying 50- to 60 percent chance of hair loss.

Whether you are a fan of his politics or not, you can't deny he looks good for his age, and can't help but wonder how does he do it?

While his hairline is controlled, consistent and specific - it isn't unnatural, which means his perfect hairline isn't due to a hair transplant. My guess would be he is using a strong conditioner or maybe a light styling product to keep his hair in check during those heated debates. As for his gray hair, it too looks natural, although at times there has appeared to be more gray than others - not uncommon among those in the spotlight. It wouldn't surprise me if Romney, who has been known to cut his own hair at times, is keeping the gray hair in check with a DIY color treatment.

It is certainly possible that Romney is using some medical intervention to help maintain his healthy hairline, but if you look at photos of his dad and his full head of hair, its clear the politician is also blessed with good genes!

The bottom line is, if you want hair like Mitt's - start with good genes! But today, there is good news for those less fortunate in the genes department, medical therapies and low level laser therapy can help you keep the hair that you have, while FUE hair transplants can restore what you've lost!

Coleen Rooney Displaying Signs of Traction Alopecia

England football star Wayne Rooney publicly shared his hair transplant last year by tweeting photos of his new hairline after the procedure. Now, new pictures indicate that his wife, Coleen Rooney, might also be struggling with hair loss.

From the photos, you can see the 25-year old is sporting what appears to be a bald spot, a telling sign that she is likely suffering from a condition called traction alopecia. Coleen, who is said to be a frequent user of hair extensions, now appears to be dealing with the consequences of the pulling, styling and abuse her follicles have suffered over the years.

Traction Alopecia is common among people who wear tight braids, those who use hair extensions over a long period of time, attach wigs or weaves with glue/clips/tape, or those who suffer from trichotillomania (hair-pulling disease), traction alopecia is a result of the chronic tension or pulling on the follicles causing irreparable damage.

The definitive cure is hair transplantation which permanently replaces the follicles into the bald skin. However, without a change in hair-care habits, the transplanted hair is also at risk.

X Factor Judge Louis Walsh Admits Hair Transplant

Walsh is a great example of the power of hair transplantation to create a younger, thicker, fuller hairline. The post-surgical results are really dramatic for him. A full hairline is really important for "framing" the face and preventing the appearance of premature aging.

The host is pleased with his results, telling The Daily Mail: "It’s called maintenance...It’s just me, with my own hair, feeling better." And he is encouraging others to take action early and solve the problem before it really becomes a problem.

Louis had admitted to the Daily Mail that he had the more traditional linear or 'strip' style of hair transplant harvesting, as opposed to the newer, less invasive FUE or Follicular Unit Extraction style of harvesting which requires no stitches or staples in the donor area and leaves no linear scar.

Today, hair transplantation is growing in popularity and can often be done undetectably. NeoGraft FUE has made the transplantation process easier than ever with less discomfort, quicker downtime, no telltale scar... making it a viable option for both men and women with hair loss. New technology allowing less-invasive hair transplant procedures like NeoGraft are attractive to many celebrities looking to enhance their looks discreetly. It is not clear at this time why Louis Walsh chose the traditional procedure over the FUE hair transplant.

LeBron James' Hairline Woes

LeBron James' receding hairline has been the punchline of many jokes and is often the topic of media speculation, but it appears the basketball star might be planning to put an end to all that.

In a recent Twitter post, LeBron suggested his hairline might be coming back soon. While the 26-year old athlete might be using humor to address the situation, if he is serious about wanting to reverse the damage, there are options available that can help.

LeBron's best bet is a minimally invasive hair transplant with NeoGraft FUE. The NeoGraft FUE procedure allows athletes like LeBron to avoid having stitches in their donor area, therefore, allowing him to return to training and workouts in as little as three days. Another bonus, NeoGraft leaves no 'tell-tale' linear scar, so very short haircuts are possible later on.

He would hardly be the first public figure to take action against hair loss, more celebrities and athletes are investing in hair restoration than ever before. New technology and non-invasive procedures are selling points for those looking to enhance their looks discreetly. With the NBA currently stuck in a lockout, now may be the perfect time for LeBron to seek the help of a board-certified hair restoration physician.

Many people are surprised to learn that hair transplantation works equally well for ethnic patients and especially those of African descent.  Before and After photos of Dr. Alan Bauman's ethnic hair transplant patients are available.

Are Hair Extensions to Blame for Serena Williams' Bald Spot?

Tennis star Serena Williams' changing hairstyles seem to be taking a toll on her hair. Recent photos show the 30-year old sporting a bald spot, a telling sign that she is likely suffering from a condition called traction alopecia.

Well known for her long time use of hair extensions and weaves, it appears that Serena may be now dealing with the consequences of the pulling, styling and abuse her follicles have suffered over many years.

Common among people who wear tight braids, those who use hair extensions over a long period of time, attach wigs or weaves with glue/clips/tape, or those who suffer from trichotillomania (hair-pulling disease), traction alopecia is a result of the chronic tension or pulling on the follicles causing irreparable damage.

The definitive cure is hair transplantation which permanently replaces the follicles into the bald skin. However, without a change in hair-care habits, the transplanted hair is also at risk.

Major Increase in Less Invasive Hair Transplants

In spite of the sluggish global economy, demand for hair restoration surgery is on the rise - increasing 15 percent in the U.S. and 66 percent worldwide between 2004 and 2010, according to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery’s 2011 Practice Census. The key reason for this spike is the demand for a less-invasive hair transplant procedure known as Follicular-Unit Extraction, or FUE

FUE has proven to be a major advancement for the field of hair loss as it allows the surgeon to restore living and growing hair to balding patients without the traditional removal of a large strip of ‘donor’ skin from the back of the head. This traditional strip-harvest method requires the use of scalpel and stitches – and results in a tell-tale linear scar at the donor site. It’s easy to see why patients would prefer the less-invasive no-scalpel/no-stitch FUE over the traditional strip-harvest method. Now that FUE is gaining increased acceptance in the hair transplant community, and there is a growing track record of results worldwide, patient demand is soaring.

The percentage of FUE transplants doubled from 2009 to 2011. In 2009, FUE accounted for 10.8 percent of all surgical procedures; by 2011, that number had increased to 22 percent. In other words, in 2009, 25,200 of surgical hair restoration procedures were FUE transplants. In 2011, the number had more than doubled to 61,464.

Queen's Hairdresser Reportedly Urging Prince William to have Hair Transplant

British papers are reporting that the Queen's longtime hair dresser is urging Prince William to undergo a hair transplant.

At 28, Prince William has advanced male pattern hair loss for his age - in fact, he's a Norwood Class III-vertex, progressing quickly toward IV and beyond.

While a microsurgical FUE hair transplant with NeoGraft (the "Cadillac of hair transplants") would provide the best results, he does have other options.

Prince William would benefit from a multi-therapy approach that combines finasteride (Propecia), minoxidil (Rogaine) and Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). Non-invasive FDA-approved therapies can start reversing the miniaturization of the hair follicles immediately.

Today hair transplantation is growing in popularity and can often be done undetectably. But the bottom line is, there are many options available for Prince William should he wish to take on his hair loss.

Wayne Rooney opts for FUE hair transplant, tweets photos

Footballer Wayne Rooney experienced hair loss in his 20s, which is common for about 20% of men.  At 17 years of age (below), he was sporting a pretty good head of hair...

As he aged, he his hairline and temples receded as male pattern hair loss caused miniaturization of the hair follicles as seen in the photo below.  Early treatment with medical therapy could have prevented this (or at least slowed it down considerably).  At age 25, he looked much older than his his age as the 'frame' of the face changed.

Shortly after his transplant, he tweeted:

"I was going bald at 25 - why not. I'm delighted with the result," Rooney posted over the weekend, adding: "It's still a bit bruised and swollen."

For about a week after his FUE hair transplant procedure, his scabs will remain, then begin to flake off.
The designed hairline, see here in this photo with scabs (above), looks especially straight and round. It is not clear at this point whether this was Rooney's choice or that of his hair transplant surgeon.

FUE-style transplants require no scalpel or stitches for harvesting of hair follicles, so there is no activity restriction after three days.  A variety of devices, like NeoGraft, can assist with this type of procedure. New robotic methods are also being researched.

For more information on FUE hair transplants using NeoGraft, do a search on YouTube or visit http://www.neograft.info.

Wayne Rooney Gets Hair Transplant

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney's rapidly receding hairline has been a sensitive subject for him in recent years. So it didn't come as much of a surprise when he decided to take action, in the form of a hair transplant.

Transplants like Rooney's, performed with NeoGraft FUE allows coverage of the scalp and the creation of a natural, living and growing hairline for every single patient.

NeoGraft FUE has made hair transplantation easier than ever and a viable option for many men and women.

The procedure is ideal for athletes as it avoids having stitches in their donor area and calls for minimal recovery, usually three days, so it wouldn't disrupt his golf game.

Today's technology means that hair loss is no longer inevitable...it's optional!

The 25-year-old footballer treated his followers to the first look at his new 'do. He tweeted: 'Just to confirm to all my followers I have had a hair transplant. I was going bald at 25 why not. I'm delighted with the result.'
