Hair Extensions for Jennifer Lawrence?

It's hard to find someone in Hollywood who isn't using hair extensions - and Jennifer Lawrence is certainly no different. She was recently spotted in New York where her extensions were evident as she went apartment hunting.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: extensions are extremely bad for the hair! The extra weight and pulling effect can physically damage the hair follicles, resulting in permanent hair loss (i.e., traction alopecia). A number of celebrities, from Naomi Campbell to Kim Kardashian, appear to be suffering the after-effects of these products.

Female hair loss is often caused by genetic factors, but there are a number of other ways you can damage your hair - physical damage from extensions, wigs, braids, pony-tails, etc. is something every woman needs to be aware of. It's ok to do so every once in a while, but if it is done regularly it will likely lead to irreversible damage to the follicles.

Jennifer Lawrence's Awkward Hair Phase

Jennifer Lawrence shocked her fans last fall by debuting a chic pixie cut, but it appears she is ready for a change, as she was spotted around town sporting an awkward length bob. Most women are all too familiar with the awkward hair phase, but if Jennifer wants to escape this stage fast, there are ways she can stimulate healthy hair growth.

1) Jennifer should be eating a diet filled with healthy hair foods, such as red meat, fish, berries, pomegranate juice, beans, artichokes and nuts. If you can stomach it, liver is one of the best foods for your hair. Iron, zinc, biotin, selenium and B-12 and key vitamins for healthy hair growth.
2) Low level laser therapy is a great way to stimulate growth and thickness in the hair. There are several hand-held “laser brushes” available on the market, and even a "LaserCap" that allows you to give your hair a boost wherever you are!
3) Nutritional supplements like the fish-protein based Viviscal Pro, and pharmaceutical-grade biotin, along with prostaglandin analogs can all boost the vitality of your hair.

Will the Pixie Cut Trend Continue in 2014?

If we look back at celebrity hairstyles in 2013, there is no doubt that the biggest trend was the pixie cut. Everyone from Beyonce to Jennifer Lawrence to Pamela Anderson ditched their signature long locks in favor of sleek and sophisticated pixies.

While not everyone was a fan of this trend, I for one commend these stars for ditching the extensions and over-styling that goes into maintaing long locks.

I've discussed many times the risks that come with the use of extensions and weaves, but no matter how many celebrities fall victim, women still seem to love the ever-changing looks they provide. Hopefully, more women will take a cue from these stars and give their hair a break this year. A good hair cut is a great way to get your hair healthy again, as long as you change the habits that were damaging your hair in the first place!

The pixie wasn't the only big celebrity hair trend in 2013, for a recap of other hairstyles that had people talking, check out Styleite's current feature, here

Jennifer Lawrence Chops Hair: "My Hair Was Fried"

Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence is making headlines for her new dramatic pixie cut. It appears the new look isn't for a new role, but instead, the result of excessive styling for recent roles.

"My hair couldn't get any uglier," she was quoted after the cut. She later clarified her statements by admitting that part of the reason she chopped her hair was because it was "fried from being dyed too much."

Jennifer is hardly the first celebrity starlet to see damage following over-styling. She joins Megan Fox, Carey Mulligan, January Jones and Lady Gaga, who have all admitted to hair woes, and even hair loss, following constant color changes.

Many women don’t realize that chemicals like bleaches and dyes fundamentally change the structure of their hair, making it weaker and more susceptible to breakage and damage. Overusing these treatments and frequent color changes can lead to breakage, hair fallout, loss of density and volume, and in some severe cases, even traction alopecia.

Hair Loss for Jennifer Lawrence?

The Daily Star's Jessica Brown recently reported on a rumor that Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence, 22, might be losing her hair - due to overzealous chemical treatments and extensions. Read it here.

Is this true? It's certainly possible. I routinely warn patients about hair extensions as these can damage the follicles and lead to a type of hair loss called 'traction alopecia.' Chemical treatments can also cause severe damage, leading to significant breakage and hair fallout.

Given her young age, Lawrence's hair probably isn't in that bad of shape - although it's hard to tell without being able to examine her follicles and strands. I would strongly encourage her to avoid hair extensions as much as possible - and to reduce the chemical treatments too. As a Hollywood actress, however, it's probably hard to eliminate the latter altogether. To help her hair, she should start using protective shampoos/conditioners that can help boost the quality of these strands - like Pantene's new AgeDefy line. It would also be wise to get started on Viviscal and low level therapy.
