Oscar Nominations - Best & Worst for Hair

This year's Oscar nominations are in (see this slideshow) - and while it's anyone's guess which Hollywood star will win the coveted Best Actor/Actress and Best Supporting awards this year, it's a bit easier to tell who's winning on the hair front. Many of this year's nominees have more than just other actors to contend with - they've got serious follicle troubles too.

Who's got the best hair?

Out of this year's nominees, I have to say, I'm most impressed by Denzel Washington, 58 (Best Actor nominee, "Flight"). His air defies his age and has been virtually unchanged for more than a decade. No hairpieces for him - he just has strong genetics on his side.

Tied for second are Robert De Niro and Christoph Waltz.

At 69, De Niro (Best Supporting Actor, "Silver Linings"), is definitely beating the odds - and, while he does show temporal recession, graying and general thinning, overall the quality of his hairline is superb for his age group.

Christoph Waltz, 56 (Best Supporting Actor, "Django Unlimited"), is another aging star who's hairline is still flourishing. He too shows moderate temporal recession and thinning, but not bad for his age.

Both De Niro and Waltz could still benefit, however, from treatments like Rogaine, Propecia and low level laser therapy.

Who's in trouble?

I've written about Joaquin Phoenix (Best Actor, "The Master") before and his hair line continues to recess. At 38, Phoenix would be wise to get started soon on preventative treatments to avoid the aging effects that more substantial hair loss are sure to bring.

Two other stars that should consider preventative treatments are Bradley Cooper, 38 (Best Actor, "Silver Linings Playbook"), and Hugh Jackman, 44 (Best Actor, "Les Miserables"). While neither is yet severely thinning, they both show signs of broad temporal point recession, a higher hair line, etc.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman, 45 (Best Supporting Actor, "The Master"), would also be well-advised to begin a treatment program.

Rounding out the list is Tommy Lee Jones, 66 (Best Supporting Actor, "Lincoln"), and Alan Arkin, 78 (Best Supporting Actor, "Argo"). Although Arkin is no longer at a point to restore his hair, Jones' hair loss could still benefit from NeoGraft FUE hair transplantation - as advanced as the hair loss is.

Overall, this year's stars are a mixed bag when it comes to hair loss - hopefully more of them will begin using proven restorative treatments.

The Company Men's Tommy Lee Jones Facing Recession

Tommy Lee Jones' new movie The Company Men deals with the economic recession - but in real life, the actor is facing a recession of another kind.

As you can see from the photos, Jones has deep recession in his temporal region and thinning across the hairline has left only wispy strands of hair. But thanks to new technology, he still has options.

If he were my patient, I'd advise him to start a regimen of Propecia or Rogaine immediately, to help stop further recession. I'd also suggest Low Level Laser Therapy which could help stimulate growth.

At 64, some might think he is too old to invest in hair treatment, but new, non-invasive treatment options might entice the star to make a change - especially as he continues to be in the spotlight.
