Are Hair Extensions to Blame for Serena Williams' Bald Spot?

Tennis star Serena Williams' changing hairstyles seem to be taking a toll on her hair. Recent photos show the 30-year old sporting a bald spot, a telling sign that she is likely suffering from a condition called traction alopecia.

Well known for her long time use of hair extensions and weaves, it appears that Serena may be now dealing with the consequences of the pulling, styling and abuse her follicles have suffered over many years.

Common among people who wear tight braids, those who use hair extensions over a long period of time, attach wigs or weaves with glue/clips/tape, or those who suffer from trichotillomania (hair-pulling disease), traction alopecia is a result of the chronic tension or pulling on the follicles causing irreparable damage.

The definitive cure is hair transplantation which permanently replaces the follicles into the bald skin. However, without a change in hair-care habits, the transplanted hair is also at risk.

Conan O'Brien Voted Best Celebrity Hair

Conan O'Brien has the best celebrity hair, at least according to a recent survey conducted on Facebook by Pert Plus. The comedian and TV personality took first place in the survey, which asked men which male celebrity’s hair they like the best.

CNN's Anderson Cooper, aka 'the Silver Fox' came in a very close second behind Conan.

And when asked about hair loss, the majority of participants said they would prefer to go “bald and beautiful” rather than sport a William Shatner rug.

But, thanks to new technology, men no longer have to choose between a "rug" or going bald.

Balding Finola Hughes Becomes Hairloss Treatment Spokesperson

Actress Finola Hughes recently admitted that she was experiencing balding.

"Either the stress or the hormones had a huge effect on my hair and it started to come out in clumps and I lost a lot of the front volume of it. I didn't know what to do," she commented in a recent interview.

Finola isn't alone, nearly 40 million women in America are suffering from hair loss or thinning, a process that can be particularly devastating for females.

While there are numerous over the counter options out there, I prefer Viviscal Pro, a vitamin supplement, which can only be prescribed by a physician.

In fact, Finola has signed up as the new pitchwoman for Viviscal's new haircare and medication line that aids women in growing healthier and thicker hair.

The bottom line is, hair loss isn't something you have to live with, so talk to a hair restoration doctor today about which option is right for you!

Ben Affleck Aging Gracefully

Ben Affleck has recently been seen around Hollywood sporting a more natural look, including a scruffy beard, salt and pepper hair and a bald patch at the back of his head.

Despite the attention his aging off-screen appearance might be getting, his problems are typical of a 38-year old man.

I would recommend a regimen of an FDA-approved medication like Propecia and Rogaine to help combat his growing bald spot and thinning hair.

He might also want to consider Low Level Laser Therapy treatments, which would stimulate growth and help create thicker, fuller, healthier hair.

Tiger Woods Rebuilding Game and Image

Tiger Woods' top priority is his golf game - and rightfully so - but the star is also hoping to make a personal comeback in 2011. The golf pro, 35, is no doubt coming off a stressful year and it shows in his hair.

Like many men his age, Tiger is seeing deep recession is the temporal region as well as a growing bald spot.

Tiger might want to consider a minimally invasive hair transplant with NeoGraft FUE. The procedure is ideal for athletes as it avoids having stitches in their donor area and calls for minimal recovery, usually three days, so it wouldn't disrupt his golf game.

While it might take a while for Tiger to fully get his swing back, a new 'do' might be just what he needs to help rebuild his confidence off the green.

Ryan Gosling Does Method Balding

'Blue Valentine' is getting a lot of early buzz, NY Daily News reviewed the movie saying, "It offers it all for movie fans, even method balding by Ryan Gosling."

In the film, Ryan's character ages six years, to help Ryan age on screen, his hairline is shown receding throughout the movie. In an interview he said he modeled his hairline after his director.

Gosling, who turned 30 this year, still has a full head of hair, but he is beginning to see some temporal recession. It might be time for the actor to start thinking about FDA-approved medication Rogaine or Propecia.
