Carlos Boozer Admits to Painting his Hair

Some men try the combover, some go for a hairpiece, but NBA star Carlos Boozer took another direction to hide his hair loss - paint!

Well, not paint exactly. In a recent interview, Boozer finally came clean on the extreme measures he's tried to get his hair back. “…they came out with this — it’s like a hair dye, whatever, for men called the ‘bigen.’ So I tried it, and he just made my stuff look like shoe polish up there … this is like five years later, and I’m still hearing about it.”

While Boozer seems to be able to joke about the incident now, for most men, hair loss isn't a laughing matter. Luckily, there are lots of effective treatments available, such as finasteride or minoxidil based therapy, platetlet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, Formula 82M, low-level laser therapy, and advanced hair transplant procedures. Hair loss is a treatable condition, but early detection and intervention are keys to achieving optimal results.

Did Vanity Fair Photoshop Prince William's Bald Spot?

Prince William and his family are on the cover of the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, but if you look close, you'll notice that Prince William's bald spot seems to have vanished, leaving many questioning whether or not the magazine did a little photoshopping.

I can't say for sure, but if you compare his cover portrait to other photos, you will notice his hair does appear a little thicker.

I've discussed Prince William's hair loss in the past on this site, at 32, he has advanced male pattern hair loss for his age - in fact, he's a Norwood Class III-vertex, progressing quickly toward IV and beyond. In my opinion, it would be best to start a multi-therapy approach immediately that combines finasteride (Propecia), minoxidil (Rogaine) and Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). Non-invasive FDA-approved therapies can start reversing the miniaturization of the hair follicles immediately. Because hair growth rates are slow, the results will take 3-9 months to become appreciated. A microsurgical FUE hair transplant with NeoGraft (the "Cadillac of hair transplants") would also do wonders for him.

The good news is, if Prince William decides he likes the look of a fuller head of hair, there are many options available today to restore his lost follicles.

Jon Cryer Admits Hair is Fake

'Two and a Half Men' star Jon Cryer appeared on Conan O'Brien this week and made a hair loss confession - his character's hair on the hit show is fake!

What was perhaps most surprising about the revelation was how Jon is choosing to address his hair loss, telling Conan: "This is the work of several talented professionals making the most of, like, four hairs. It's amazing, actually, what they can do. I'm not wearing a piece or anything like that, but it's a long, involved process that starts with stuff like shoe polish."

While the actor was able to make jokes about his hair loss and his 'fake mane,' for many, hair loss is no laughing matter. But luckily, for most people, hair loss can be a treatable condition.

One of the best things you can do for your hair is to take a proactive approach to managing any signs of hair loss or thinning. Early detection is one of the most effective tools we have in treating thinning. It is important to consult with a board-certified hair restoration physician— who can evaluate, measure and manage your hair loss issues and find the right treatment for you.

Hair Loss Tied to Braiding, Weaving Styles

Very tight braiding or weaving may be linked to a permanent type of hair loss that affects many African American women, according to a U.S. study.

Prolonged pulling at the hair strands may cause inflammation of the hair follicle, which has been showed to lead to scarring.

In principle, this could lead to scarring hair loss or central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, a type of balding that starts at the top of the scalp and then spreads slowly to the rest.

The study, published in the Archives of Dermatology, is based on health questionnaires and scalp examinations of 326 African American women.

Nearly all of them straightened their curls chemically and about one in six had scarring hair loss. More than half the women with this condition said they had braids, weaves or hair extensions, as compared to only a third of those with less severe hair loss.
In a previous post I discussed Naomi Campbell's traction alopecia, the use of hair extensions is a known cause of severe hair loss because of traction alopecia.

Prince: Guitar Saved My Hair

At 52, pop star legend Prince has the hairline of a man half his age, which is quite remarkable considering there is a 50 percent chance of hair loss in men in their 50s.

So what is his secret? My guess would be that he started using Propecia years ago as a preventative measure.

But Prince has another explanation for why his hairline hasn't aged.

“Playing electric guitar your whole life does something to you. I’m convinced all that electricity racing through your body made me keep my hair," he explained in a recent interview.

While his claim might be a stretch, one thing is certain - he's still got it!
